Preferred payment method change in real time?

When I change my preferred payment method, the change doesn't take effect right away. Sometimes the previous preferred payment method stays in effect for several days. How can I tell when the new preferred payment method is in effect?

Hi @EmilineG

Thank you for your post.

Normally once you change your preferred payment method it should change straight away. Have you been changing your preferred method often as if you are changing it alot it may be our security system delaying it to be sure it is you changing it.

When you are making a payment it will show you the funding source that will be used for that payment. If you click on more funding options you can change where you want the payment to come from. I would always recommend to check this for each transaction just to be sure.

I hope this helps,

Paula

Thank you Paula, now I understand how to use "preferred" funding source when I am ordering online. When I order by telephone, and the seller knows me very well, they run the order through their system and their system charges me based on historical information they already have. The seller says their system does not give them the opportunity to change the funding source. The last time I placed a large order, it was funded directly from my bank account instead of my credit card which was the preferred funding source, even though in the past it was always funded by my credit card. How can I guarantee that my next large order with this seller will be funded from my credit card?

Hey @EmilineG,

Every time you make a payment from your PayPal account it goes through a series of filters to determine how much potential risk may be involved. Occasionally, we must change a payment method if the system noticed a pattern associated with risk. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused.

Best wishes,

Bindu

Dear Bindu, thank you for your reply. It's not your fault, it's PayPal's fault. PayPal is of little use to me if I can't control the preferred payment method. I made a $700 purchase and wanted to use my credit card because of the rewards. But PayPal took the money directly from my bank account. They did not send me a notification of any kind. If PayPal is going to make last minute changes to my purchases, maybe I should consider some other tool.
