As 22yr Paypal customer I chose to apply for Paypal Credit and received a sizeable credit line. I did that so I could specifically manage large purchases to pay over time with the security of Paypal transactions. I changed my preferred payment method to PayPal credit (I can always make exceptions for smaller purchases and change on Paypal to my bank card before completing transaction). But when making purchases on ebay, ebay DETERMINES MY PAYMENT METHOD as "automatic payment". Okay so while Paypal automatic payment feature allows changing payment method for individual sellers, for ebay the option does not offer Paypal credit as a payment method. Researching this I find this problem has existed for well over 9 yrs and throughout that span of time customer like me are complaining about the same issue. What am I missing? Paypal customer service is worthless - the circular automated assistant pukes out FAQ answers and leaving messages Paypal ends up with never a response. Perhaps it time to leave Paypal in the dust. They are not responsive to customers.

Yup HD_Snow, it's like Russian Roulette with eBay Offer/Buy payments - as you stated sometimes processed directly against Bank checking account via Paypal automatic pmt (similar to how managed payments are paid) and sometimes through personal credit card on file or Paypal Credit. I always use Paypal credit for online payments because it puts a buffer between personal bank account and the merchant, especially those who automatically save your payment method which I believe poses risk of hacking. The problem is it depends on the code eBay uses in the payment cart handling the transaction. You may not be presented with Paypal's popup that allows you to select the payment type. This issue came about when Paypal and eBay split - they used to be one organization and all payments via Paypal were on the automatic payment process. When they split eBay didn't rewrite their code as if they were a new merchant with Paypal, but used the old code with modifications (it was cheaper to do and less work for eBay). I doubt you'll see change. My solution is when making an eBay offer, once I see the autopayment form pop up, I abandon the offer and write directly to seller requesting the disable the autopayment from the auction page, otherwise I simply don't buy the item.

Same thing keeps happening to me. My preferred method is PayPal Balance, but eBay sales take the money directly from my bank account. This just started a couple of months ago.

I'd like to add the following isolation of variables and other testing mechanisms:
Does PayPal Credit work at eBay?
No.
Does PayPal Credit work at e-merchants, other than eBay?
Yes.
Other than eBay, did PayPal payments always allow me the option to choose without any issue?
Yes.
Has PayPal payment processing been without issue 100% of the time (sans eBay)?
Yes.
Well... there was this one time, a transaction slowly took to be refunded, but ultimately that resolved itself, too.
Did PayPal Credit ever work at eBay?
Yes.
It did! Perfectly!! e.g., during the eBay checkout process, I would receive an intermediary prompt to select my my PayPal payment choice: I was given a default option, which was my PayPal preferredl payment method; I could then choose to select another payment type, including PayPal Credit. That worked up until maybe a year or more, ago, but it was intermittment, like it *seemed a vendor could choose not to allow PayPal as payment type. Not 100% certain since I hadn't bought anything for a while on eBay.
My Conclusion
Sure, there could be something going on between the two (2) companies, but it's 90% likely this is wholly an eBay issue: root cause, policy changes, etc all point to eBay.

@ Spraggih - Using the "Buy Now" processing you have all the options for payment method including default Paypal that is an ACH direct draw on bank account on file, Paypal Credit and Paypal extended payment terms, your credit card on file as well as an option to enter a new credit card. And if seller make offer to buyer, the buyer has all those same options. However if Buyer initiates "Offer" the only pmt options are "Paypal" (which is the default ACH) or Credit card on ebay file. I just explainn to sellers and request them to send me an offer at the stated auction price and I counter with a lower amount. If they accept, that offer process above offers Buyer all the payment methods I've noted above. I think its a matter of offshore development of code and those folks don't understand the easy short code is Paypal ACH.

The only way around this is to remove PayPal as a payment option in eBay Account Settings. You will still have the PayPal option at check out, however you will be directed to PayPal's site where you can then choose to use traditional PayPal, PayPal Credit or even Pay in 4 to complete your eBay purchase. You lose the convenience of 'One Click' PayPal payments when you check out but at least you will know where the money will be taken from BEFORE you pay for it. Hope this helps.

Not sure that solves anything. eBay requires a default payment method. You can elect PayPal or add a credit card. By removing Paypal as a payment method on my account leaves me with having to upload a credit card onto my eBay profile. Then when I make offer, that default payment method is used. Given the hacks eBay has suffered in the past couple years, I will not store credit card info on eBay's site. Understand the issue is eBay controlling how buyers pay for their purchases which is really none of eBay's business. This isn't a matter of buyer work arounds but one of privacy and security protection.

This worked for me. The Paypal Credit logo wasn't working at checkout after my counter-offer was accepted. Started to panic a little, but following the instructions you provided gave me instant results. Thank you!

On Ebay I have PayPal as my auction and best offer payment. On PayPal I have PayPal credit as my preferred method of payment (when amounts allow it).
I win an auction for a big amount, PayPal credit shows as an option, I chose it, I am asked to confirm it, I do and payment goes through. I view the order and says paid with PayPal, then I see my CC notification of the amount has been charged, nice! Ebay tells me they see PayPal as used for payment and to contact PayPal, still waiting to reach them.
Yes I have a CC on PayPal to use for smaller purchases, but why PP credit was not used? For what I gather there is no solution to this, Ebay says is PayPal issue and PayPal says is Ebay settings.
